A severe cyclonic storm named Biparjoy is currently developing over the Arabian Sea. It is expected to make landfall on the Gujarat coast on Thursday, June 15, as a “very severe cyclonic storm” with maximum sustained wind speeds of 125-135 kmph gusting to 150 kmph. The storm is likely to bring heavy rains and strong winds to Gujarat, and could cause widespread damage.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for six districts in Gujarat: Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Jamnagar, Porbandar, Rajkot and Surendranagar. A red alert means that there is a high risk of “very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall” and “gale-force winds”.
