
The Uttar Pradesh government has banned the sale and consumption of alcohol and meat within a 10-kilometer radius of Mathura and Vrindavan, two holy cities in the state. The ban was imposed on Friday, September 10, 2021, ahead of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival.
The government has said that the ban will be strictly enforced. Violators will face a fine of up to ₹5,000 (US$65) or imprisonment for up to three months.
